Unions to Cuomo: Quit Jawboning On Education; Give Schools Aid You Owe

Teacher unions and their allies opposing a series of education-policy changes proposed in January by Governor Cuomo went on the offensive last week by demanding he send the city $2.5 billion they say is owed to its schools.

At a Feb. 19 rally in front of City Hall, roughly 40 members of the Alliance for Quality Education, United Federation of Teachers, city and state lawmakers, and other activists emphasized that the 2006 Campaign for Fiscal Equity settlement and the state law passed the following year obligated Albany to provide more money to address chronic underfunding of the city’s school system. Though initially funded by former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, his successors, David Paterson and Mr. Cuomo, rerouted the money following the 2008 financial crisis.
