The large number of public-employee unions that perceive the Trump Administration as hostile to labor and their members’ interests, in addition to celebrating Democrats capturing a majority in the House of Representatives in the Nov. 6 election were heartened by the defeat of two Midwestern Governors with distinctly anti-labor views, Scott Walker of Wisconsin and Bruce Rauner of Illinois.
Mr. Walker in his bid for a third term was narrowly defeated by Tony Evers, who had been Wisconsin’s Schools Superintendent, by slightly over 1 percent of the 2.6 million votes cast. Mr. Rauner, who is completing his first term, was hammered by J.B. Pritzker, a billionaire venture capitalist, who led a statewide sweep by Democrats that also allowed the party to gain two congressional seats. Mr. Pritzker’s 15-point win produced a margin of more than 650,000 votes.
