UFT Working on Several Fronts To Elect Democrats in Albany, Florida

“We don’t want to go back to the old days when standardized-test scores were used on Teacher evaluations,” said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew six days ahead of the Nov. 6 general election. “For any educator, this is about saying ‘enough is enough.’ ”

Flipping the State Senate’s one-vote Republican majority has been a priority for the union, which represents 120,000 Teachers, Guidance Counselors and Paraprofessionals. Mr. Mulgrew said the union was targeting Senate members who voted in favor of a bill that would have increased the number of charter schools and reduced oversight of yeshivas in exchange for state test scores no longer being used in Teacher evaluations, which the union and State Assembly vehemently opposed. The Assembly passed its own version of the proposal to reform the evaluations process, but the bill languished through the end of the legislative session.
