In the most-closely-contested of the key legislative primaries Sept. 13, the United Federation of Teachers’ choice to replace Adriano Espaillat as State Senator representing the Upper West Side and northern Manhattan, ex-City Councilman Robert Jackson, wound up a close third behind veteran New York State Nurses Association organizer Marisol Alcantara and the runner-up, Micah Lasher.
But UFT President Michael Mulgrew didn’t sound at all disappointed in discussing the results two days later, arguing that on the whole the night was a success for the union in five other pitched battles with private-school-voucher-supporting hedge-fund interests that backed challengers to Democratic incumbents and came up empty.
