All five Borough Presidents last week pledged their support for boosting disability benefits for cops and firefighters hired after 2009, while Uniformed Firefighters Association President Steve Cassidy called out Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito for not yet having scheduled a hearing on the matter. A supermajority of Council Members has signed on to a resolution supporting the change.
The UFA launched a campaign last month to strengthen the safety net for newer members, whose state disability payments if they were forced to retire from on-the-job injuries would amount to about $27 a day under the Tier 3 disability provision.
