A veteran Transport Workers Union Local 100 activist is a contender in the Feb. 14 special election for Harlem’s 9th City Council District seat vacated when Inez Dickens left for a State Assembly seat last month. Ms. Dickens was elected to the Assembly back in November after holding the Council seat since 2006.
Marvin Holland, TWU Local 100’s political and legislative director, hopes his years of union activism generate enough grass-roots support to help him prevail in a 9-person field. Another election for a full four-year term will be held later this year for the seat. A City Council Member makes $148,500 a year, compared to $79,500 for Assembly Members, but under the city’s Term Limits Law, she could not have sought a fourth Council term.
