Transit supervisors and employees of the MTA’s private bus lines are entitled to the same raises that Transport Workers Union Local 100 members received in their last contract, an arbitration panel ruled last month in separate 2-to-1 decisions that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority sharply contests.
Only employer’s representative Gary Dellaverson—formerly the MTA’s chief negotiator—dissented in each case. Arbitrator Howard Edelman, who wrote the decisions, hewed to the Local 100 pattern established by John Zuccotti in 2009, retroactively granting both groups 11-percent wage increases over their three-year contracts. He rejected the MTA’s argument that that decision was based on flawed economics, and that union employees should “share the sacrifices” made by riders and management since the recession.
