More than 23 years later, one of the NYPD’s most-visible Deputy Commissioners apologized to the victim of a 1994 rape for feeding reporters information that cast doubt on her story.
The woman, who was dragged off a footpath and raped in Prospect Park, was called a liar by the late Daily News columnist Mike McAlary. Under the headline “Rape Hoax the Real Crime,” he quoted unnamed police sources who theorized that she had made up the story to publicize a gay-rights gathering.
