Teachers Who Energize Students And Find It Reciprocated Get Recognition

Though he prefers the classroom to his previous career in the field, Patrick Callahan likes introducing his students to the world outside the school.

Long before he became an educator at the Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics, he was an environmental scientist who assessed the air and soil quality at decommissioned naval bases in California. But Mr. Callahan said he didn’t feel fulfilled and began volunteering as a tutor at an after-school program, where he was encouraged to become a Teacher.
