Stamford Fire Test Is Ruled Biased Against Minorities and Women

The City of Stamford, Conn. had to throw out its firefighter entry exam because it was “a very cheap, off-the-shelf test” that was discovered to have weeded out nearly all the black candidates who took it, the city’s chief attorney said in an interview last week.

When reviewing the test, which was administered to 753 candidates in January, Corporation Counsel Kathryn Emmett said that city officials were mindful of recent court cases finding fault with nearby cities including New Haven, Conn. and New York City for discrimination against either people of color or whites.
