Some Tension Lingers Between NYPD, Council Over Handling of Detention

The degree to which the NYPD assisted the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency with its detention of Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant-rights activist who was slated for deportation last month, was the subject of a contentious hearing Feb. 7 held by the City Council Committee on Public Safety.

The hearing also brought additional scrutiny of the NYPD’s 500-member Strategic Response Group, which is trained to respond to both protests and counter-terrorism assignments.
