Silver Lining: Extra Weeks of Freedom For Ex-Speaker

Sheldon Silver was due to report to Federal prison Oct. 5, but an appeals court gave him a reprieve Sept. 25 that will allow him at least a few more weeks of freedom.

U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni, who presided over both Mr. Silver’s trials on charges of selling his influence as Speaker of the State Assembly in return for $4 million in referral fees from law firms, had rejected his request to remain free while his appeals were making their way through the courts. She said his case was so weak that it was merely an attempt to postpone his date with the prison system.
