Department of Education officials last week defended their performance in reducing class sizes, though they conceded that plans to add 33,000 seats wouldn’t meet enrollment projections.
Lorraine Grillo, President of the School Construction Authority, and DOE Acting Deputy Chancellor Elizabeth Rose said schools needed 49,000 seats to relieve congestion in schools now holding 490,000 students. But a class-size advocate and the city’s budget watchdog told the City Council’s Education Committee March 3 that the number of seats needed for manageable class sizes could be as much as twice what DOE has estimated.
