State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman abruptly resigned May 7 just three hours after the New Yorker magazine published a story saying he had physically assaulted four women with whom he had sexual relationships.
The women said he choked and slapped them, sometimes hard enough to leave marks or require medical attention. They said Mr. Schneiderman was drinking heavily at the time of the attacks. They stressed that—contrary to his initial claims that he merely "engaged in role-playing and other consensual sexual activity"—they did not consent to the violence.
