The president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association announced support for a Federal lawsuit opposing California's enforcement of sanctuary status for illegal aliens—and made clear in the process that he opposes Mayor de Blasio’s position that New York is a sanctuary city.
“Sanctuary” jurisdictions oppose Federal immigration enforcement, saying it is likely to break up families through deportation and discourage such immigrants from using such municipal services as police and health. An estimated 300 states, counties and cities have laws or policies designed to retard enforcement, such as refusing to keep illegal immigrants in jails so Federal authorities can arrest them.
