Former State Senate Democratic Leader John Sampson was sentenced to five years in prison Jan. 18 for lying to investigators and otherwise trying to thwart a probe into allegations that he embezzled $440,000 in escrow funds he used, among other things, to underwrite a 2005 bid for Brooklyn District Attorney.
The underlying embezzlement charges had been dropped by U.S. District Judge Dora Irizarry, who said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District had filed them after the statute of limitations had expired.
