After former Albany powerhouse Sheldon Silver was sentenced on his first conviction for corruption in May 2016, U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni granted his request to remain free while he appealed. The appeal was successful, and he walked away in July 2017 without having served a day of the 12 years to which she had sentenced him.
But Mr. Silver, who as Speaker of the State Assembly for 21 years was one of the fabled “three men in a room” who decided on legislation and budgets, was retried and convicted again, on the same charges, in May of this year. Judge Caproni’s patience has apparently run out.
