Under legislation passed in Albany that is awaiting action by Governor Cuomo, 300 NYPD officers who started their careers in the department’s cadet program before 2012 could have the time they served in the two-year apprenticeship count toward their pension allowances.
In 2012, the Bloomberg administration conceded it had erred in not letting NYPD cadets enroll in the Police Pension Fund, but its change in policy was applicable only to cadets who subsequently joined the program.
