PBA Comes a Long Way, Finally Takes ‘Men’ Out of Name

In June 1989, after then-Transit Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President William L. McKechnie persuaded his rank and file to narrowly approve a name change substituting “Police” for “Patrolmen’s,” his counterpart at the city Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Philip P. Caruso, made clear he would not be following suit.

The case for the change at his union, Mr. McKechnie said shortly before the vote, was, “There’s over 400 [Transit] policewomen. If we’re going to truly represent everybody, the title should be generic.”
