When Gertrude Schimmel joined the NYPD in 1940, female officers were segregated into the Policewomen’s Bureau. They would serve as stationhouse matrons, juvenile officers and occasionally work undercover in gambling and narcotics investigations—jobs that kept them away from potentially violent male criminals.
