Former Police Officer Peter Liang started out facing 3½ to 15 years in prison on his manslaughter conviction for accidentally firing a shot that killed Akai Gurley in a darkened stairwell of Brooklyn’s Pink Houses.
District Attorney Kenneth P. Thompson recommended a month ago that Mr. Liang be sentenced to six months’ home detention, 500 hours of community service and five years’ probation. The recommendation angered the Gurley family and some elected officials, who said it devalued black lives.
