Nigro Talks Hazing, Sizzling UFA Election Draws to a Close

Even as Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro continues mara­thon leadership meetings this week with FDNY officers to drive home his new anti-hazing policy, there are signs of a cultural divide with racial overtones among rank-and-file Firefighters at the close of a fierce union election.

Earlier this month at a Uniformed Firefighter Association union meeting, hundreds of green T-shirts were handed out that read “True Brotherhood Doesn’t Smear Brothers.” Multiple sources have confirmed that the faction that produced the shirts supports the slate of retired Firefighter Kenny Specht, who is running to be UFA president. Reached by text, Mr. Specht had no comment.
