Another 425 Police Officers were welcomed into the NYPD following their swearing-in at Madison Square Garden on July 2. More than one in five officers from that graduating class were women, and a similar number were born abroad. ‘It’s okay to smile, Academy’s over,’ Commissioner James P. O’Neill said at the ceremony—before telling them he would be the one taking roll call on the Fourth of July, a traditional patrol baptism for new officers.
