After being relatively low-profile in recent months, even as Albany legislators considered a proposal from Governor Cuomo to allow more charter schools statewide, Success Academy network CEO Eva Moskowitz last week defended her schools in a half-hour radio interview and chastised Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña for remarks she said disparaged them.
Over the protests of the de Blasio administration and the State Assembly, Mr. Cuomo and the State Senate are seeking to allow 100 more charters. Though Ms. Moskowitz has been one of the biggest critics of Mayor de Blasio’s education policies, she has yielded her role as unofficial spokeswoman for the charter movement to groups such as StudentsFirstNY and Families for Excellent Schools, though she’s been heavily involved in organizing rallies in Albany and lower Manhattan to push their cause.
