Though the city allocated $1.1 million to add 80 School Crossing Guards under this year’s budget, some have yet to be hired because of what Public Advocate Letitia James called a “bureaucratic standoff.” At a Nov. 2 City Hall press conference, lawmakers and educators from lower Manhattan said the shortage worried parents living in the burgeoning residential neighborhood.
“Multiple requests to NYPD to place additional [School Crossing Guards] at five schools downtown, unfortunately, have gone unanswered,” Ms. James said. “We cannot wait for one more person to be the victim of an accident that could have been easily prevented.”
