Mayor: School Turnaround Plan Is Showing Results At 2 High Schools

Four months after unveiling a citywide “Renewal Schools” initiative, Mayor de Blasio cited some gains at long-lagging schools as evidence that his administration’s turnaround plans were starting to work.

In November, he dedicated $150 million to shake up the faculty and curriculum at 94 low-performing schools by offering more instructional time, academic intervention and professional development. The Department of Education has replaced seven Principals at the targeted schools and is sending “crack teams” of Principals and Assistant Principals to assist the leaders of some of the targeted schools. By September, the Mayor said, all 94 will open hubs—known as community schools—that offer children health services and other resources.
