Mayor de Blasio’s most-recent Vision Zero report said the traffic-safety program produced the fewest fatalities on record in 2016, but transportation advocates bemoaned increases in deaths involving pedestrians and bicyclists.
“New York City has strongly countered national trends: 2016’s 230 traffic fatalities were the fewest ever in New York City, marking three successive years of decline and a 23-percent reduction since 2013,” his office said in an announcement. The figure for traffic deaths in 2015 was 234 and for 2013, the year before Mr. de Blasio launched the street-safety campaign, it was 299.
