Sept. 8 marked the first day of the new school year for the city’s 1.1 million public-school students, as well as the beginning of several of the Department of Education’s new initiatives.
Part of the city’s “Equity and Excellence” program, each new or expanded approach is designed to improve the school system for all students, according to Mayor de Blasio.
