The surprise bid that Transport Workers Union of America second-in-command Harry Lombardo made this summer for the union’s top spot paid off Sept. 24 when he was elected by acclamation at the TWU convention in Las Vegas, bringing with him Local 100 President John Samuelsen as the new second-in-line. Mr. Samuelsen will retain the local presidency while serving as the International’s executive vice president.
Rival Joseph Gordon, who until last week was international secretary-treasurer, briefly opposed Mr. Lombardo, but withdrew shortly before the convention; incumbent President James Little did the same soon after Mr. Lombardo announced his candidacy.
