Communications Workers of America Local 1180 convened a Town Hall Aug. 2 for members who wanted updates about how the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in the Janus case five weeks earlier would affect them and were concerned about the stalemate between the union and the de Blasio administration over the pay-discrimination case it filed more than five years ago.
Gloria Middleton, the union’s president, said that 94 percent of the 8,500 employees it represented were members—and so far, that figure hasn’t been affected by the Supreme Court decision that ended the right of public-sector unions to collect agency-fee payments from nonmembers.
