Legislature Approves Advanced Scanners For Rikers Island

The State Assembly passed a bill June 14 that would allow airport-style ionizing body-scanners to be used at Rikers Island to detect weapons inmates hide in their bodies.

The vote was 97 to 15. The State Senate overwhelmingly passed the bill previously. It now goes to Governor Cuomo’s desk, Elias Husamudeen, president of the Correction Officers Benevolent Association, said in an interview.
