Three Correction Officers on Rikers Island were charged last week in the fatal beating of a 52-year-old inmate who suffered from kidney disease and became argumentative when told no physician was available to see him immediately.

“We unseal charges against three Correction Officers alleging a killing and a cover-up,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said at a press conference June 10. “Both relate to the untimely death of Ronald Spear, a Rikers Island inmate who died in the early-morning hours of Dec. 19, 2012, after receiving a brutal beating.
