Dolores Sharpe just wanted to park so she could visit the Dollar Store in West Hempstead, L.I., and buy some weather-stripping. A Nassau County police car was blocking the space she wanted. Words were exchanged and she wound up in handcuffs.
This incident would have been routine except for the fact that Ms. Sharpe is a Nassau County Police Officer of 20 years’ standing. Another factor made it notable: Ms. Sharpe is black.
