As if they didn’t have enough trouble already, the eight former members of the now-defunct Independent Democratic Conference were ordered to return hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions at a time when they face strong primary challenges.
The IDC, chaired by Sen. Jeffrey D. Klein, allied with Republicans in the State Senate in 2011 to share control of that house. Mainstream Democrats built up resentment against the rebel conference, saying that it sacrificed progressive legislation to get along with the GOP.
