A report by the city’s Independent Budget Office concluded that the paid-parental-leave deal reached by the United Federation of Teachers and the de Blasio administration two months ago will save the city $9 million more than it had estimated.
Mayor de Blasio and the UFT announced June 20 that the union’s 120,000 members would get six weeks of paid parental leave at full salary starting in September. In order to fund the benefit, the city would pay $51 million into the union’s welfare fund, while the UFT agreed to extend its existing contract, which was set to expire on Nov. 30, by 73 days.
