Five officers who fought their way back from cancer and other severe illnesses to return to full duty were given the Theodore Roosevelt Award Oct. 29 by Police Commissioner William J. Bratton.
The award was named for the former U.S. President and New York Governor, who suffered from a debilitating heart condition and childhood asthma but overcame his physical challenges. He was President of the New York City Police Commission from 1895-97.
