The Housing Authority has launched an initiative to speed up the most-complex repairs in its large backlog of open work orders.
At an April City Council hearing, NYCHA officials admitted that a shortage of skilled-trades staff has contributed to a backlog of repairs that is difficult to manage. They noted that for repairs that required visits from multiple trade workers, such as fixing a leak, the process could take weeks because of the understaffing. Of NYCHA’s 10,800 staff members, there were about 1,000 skilled-trades workers.
