The NYPD’s top counter-terrorism official told a congressional panel May 6 that the city needs a change in Federal law that would empower specially trained local police to neutralize weaponized drones that pose a threat to the civilian population, particularly at large-scale outdoor events.
John Miller, the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence & Counterterrorism, told the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence and Counterterrorism that under existing law, such action requires a sign-off from the U.S. Attorney General and has to be executed by a special FBI unit from Quantico, Virginia.
