While neither candidate made an issue of the Eric Garner case in their battle to become Staten Island District Attorney, an unusually large turnout in the part of the borough where black voters are concentrated indicates that it may have been a key factor in Democrat Michael McMahon’s surprisingly comfortable win over Republican nominee Joan Illuzzi.
Veteran political consultant Jerry Skurnik, whose firm, Prime New York, offers campaigns information on constituents most likely to be engaged in politics and turn out to vote, said he hadn’t seen the 10-point victory coming, even though he shares office space with Mr. McMahon’s brother, Tom, a former top aide to City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., and spoke frequently with the candidate.
