President Trump’s racially tinged crusade against black National Football League players who decline to stand for the National Anthem as a protest against mistreatment by the police took an awkward turn June 4 when he opted to cancel a White House appearance by the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles because most of their players didn’t plan to attend.
The snub of the President, which reportedly was endorsed by all the team’s black players, came in the wake of more incendiary remarks he had made less than two weeks earlier after the NFL unilaterally put forth a policy prohibiting players from not standing at attention on the sidelines during the anthem, with fines to be imposed on those who did. While some team owners pledged to cover any fines, the President was in a less-conciliatory mood.
