Although it had widely been expected that Mayor de Blasio would announce last week that he was entering the race for President, he said when asked about that on “Inside City Hall” May 6 that he still wasn’t ready to disclose his plans.
He has already passed the deadline for being able to qualify for the first debate among Democratic primary hopefuls in late June. That may not have been relevant for Mr. de Blasio since one criterion is that a candidate must have gotten at least 1 percent of the vote based on a major national poll, and if he jumped into the race at this point, he’d risk being dubbed the “Candidate of the Almost 1 Percent.”
