The stakes are high in the contract arbitration battle between the de Blasio administration and the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

The city is determined to convince the three-man panel to limit the PBA award so that it doesn’t exceed the bargaining pattern established with a large portion of the city workforce, with the most-recent union to come on board the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association. The union has recently countered with full-page newspaper ads noting the city’s healthy budget surplus and the fact that city cops are earning “up to 30% less than the market rate” paid in neighboring jurisdictions, then stating, “It’s time to fix the police pay gap. If not now, when?”
