Melissa Mark-Viverito, the former City Council Speaker known for being both strong-willed and polarizing, proved she hadn’t mellowed in declaring her candidacy Nov. 27 for Public Advocate by stating, “There was absolutely no way that I’m going to concede that New York is going to be led by three men—and three white men at that—in a city that is 65 percent diverse.”
She was referring to the fact that, with the current occupant of the job—Letitia James, who’s no shrinking violet—due to vacate it Jan. 1, when she will become State Attorney General, the city’s three most-powerful elected officials will be Mayor de Blasio, City Comptroller Scott Stringer and City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.
