Firefighters' Memorial a Tribute To Those Whose Deaths Came Later, Too

During the 9/11 firefighter memorial service at the Firemen’s Monument on the Upper West Side, the sound of small children playing was a life-affirming counterpoint to the annual reading of the names of the 343 Fire Department members who died at the World Trade Center.

Well over a thousand firefighters from around the world gathered under a damp shade-tree canopy that hung limply over Riverside Drive.
