Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, following the recommendation of an Administrative Law Judge, has fired Firefighter Thomas Buttaro for insubordination and creating a hostile work environment for repeatedly wearing t-shirts opposing affirmative action around the firehouse.
Mr. Buttaro, who is white, had 13 years on the job before a black colleague filed an Equal Employment Opportunity complaint against him in May 2012. He testified last year at a five-day hearing before the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.
