When Paul Brower and John Esposito’s co-workers learned they were to be laid off, they couldn’t let it stand. The two professional firefighters serve in Garden City, a village in Nassau County. Both have been serving the community for more than 11 years. Each is married with two small children and a mortgage.
Two senior firefighters put in retirement bids so that the village—which said it couldn’t afford to pay the two younger men—could keep the positions.
