“Open our government, open our government,” chanted dozens of furloughed Federal employees who braved the bitter cold at a quickly-called protest at 26 Federal Plaza Jan. 15 that got thumbs-up support from bystanders as the group walked along lower Broadway.
The impromptu rally included members of the American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union. In the tristate region, there are more than 24,000 Federal workers who have been furloughed since Dec. 22 or are working without pay because their jobs are deemed essential.
