Federal Judge Rules Citizenship Question on Census Unlawful

A Federal Judge landed a blow against Trump Administration efforts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, ruling that the U.S. Commerce Department, which oversees the decennial survey, had overstepped its authority.

Following a two-week trial in December, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman’s 277-page decision, issued Jan. 15, concluded that adding the question “was unlawful for a multitude of independent reasons” and chastised the department for a “cherry-picking” rationale for its would-be inclusion.
