One of the first women to break the Fire Department gender barrier has died at age 68.
Retired Firefighter Catherine Lohan was one of the 41 women who in 1982 were admitted to the Fire Academy after a Federal gender-discrimination ruling concerning the Firefighter physical exam opened the door for women to what had been exclusively a male bastion since the FDNY’s founding in 1865.
