The 10-week Federal case against former Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano ended in a mistrial May 31 after the jury foreman sent the judge a note stating that he could no longer carry out his duties after more than a week of deliberations.
Mr. Mangano had been accused by Federal prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York of accepting bribes that ranged from expensive gifts and a luxury vacation to a no-show job for his wife from Harendra Singh, a restaurateur who received extensive business from the county. Those included the right to operate restaurants and catering facilities on its properties and loans arranged through the Town of Oyster Bay, whose Supervisor, John Venditto, was also tried but acquitted a week earlier.
